Finding the balance between simplification and over-simplification is a challenge. Like yourself, the 7-year old analogy is a principle that I also struggle for my writing for broader audience due to technical nature of my content.

It is sometimes difficult to oversimplify extremely technical points as excessive simplification may pose the risk of losing the core message and meaning of the topic. This is a dilemma that we, writers, need to deal with carefully and case by case basis.
