All my popular stories are fully highlighted from the beginning to the end. New readers say they cannot read them properly. I know discerning readers highlight some key points but Medium should find ways to show only too many highlighted words or sentences to the readers. I would agree removing claps and highlights and their use for calculating earnings. From my experience the best matrix is reading times. I explained it in comment on Scott's recent article and he said they are working on it.
